Record of Decision on Reno Spaghetti Bowl

With Project NEON complete… “substantially” at any rate, it’s time for NDOT to turn its attention to the North to improve the ratsnest Spaghetti Bowl du Norte.

The Reno-Sparks Spaghetti Bowl where the I-80 and I-580/US 395 merge in the transition from Reno to Sparks is truly in need of a major overhaul. And that is exactly what NDOT is proposing to do, in phases, between now and 2039.

On July 30, 2019, the Reno Spaghetti Bowl Alternative 2 was adopted in a record of decision by the Federal Highway Administration. This is one of the main steps in actual acquisition of property to support the construction of the project.

Due to the freeway’s location, it is anticipated that several hundred residential displacements will occur. While this number seems large, it is worth noting that one alternative (not adopted) would have resulted in about a thousand displacements.

Given the tremendous growth in the past few years, it will be interesting to see how land values rough out in the area.
