Taking Nevada

Eminent domain, condemnation, infrastructure, and land-use regulation in the Silver State.

Forward momentum, with a hefty price tag.

The saga of the Reno-Sparks Spaghetti Bowl Project is long and challenging. With an estimated lifespan of 20-years over five phases, making improvements to the major freeway interchange in Northern Nevada was never going to be easy.

Now, the RGJ is reporting that the acceptance of an unsolicited bid from Ames and Q&D Construction will allow what is either the “first phase” of the Spaghetti Bowl Project or a semi-related companion project known as the Spaghetti Bowl Xpress to move forward as much as a year ahead of schedule – but at the cost of federal funds.

In a state where the Courts are wrestling with issues of condemnation blight, precondemnation damages, and the line between planning and project implementation, this development highlights again how fluid matters can be.
